Tarmac supply building materials to some of the UK’s largest construction projects and pride themselves on delivering exceptional customer service whilst safeguarding the Health & Safety of their people.
Their Front-Line leaders are always at the forefront of maximising productivity whilst ensuring zero accidents occur on their sites, which can be a demanding and stressful leadership challenge.
Two National Managing Directors commissioned DeltaV to design a bespoke Leadership Development, Mental Resilience and Physical Wellbeing programme for their Front-Line leaders, including rich academic theory and exciting outdoor challenges that would push people out of their comfort zone and truly embed their learning.

After spending a week at Tarmac sites across the UK, DeltaV’s Dr Paul Turner designed a fantastic programme that both complimented Tarmac’s existing cultural and leadership behavioural frameworks and introduced topics that had yet been introduced to Front-Line leaders, such as Mental Resilience and Physical Wellbeing.
Dr Turner was joined by Dr Lizzy Bernthal, Alan Shaw, Matt Lock and Ben Neary to deliver a brilliant programme of workshops at our outdoor training centre in South Cerney that included:
- RQi mental resilience psychometric
- 1:1 coaching
- Theoretical lessons, group discussions and case studies
- Thrilling outdoor leadership challenges designed to replicate the pressures that Tarmac leaders experience every day, helping them to bring their learning to life and learn how they can apply theory to overcome their everyday challenges.
During our 90-day follow up coaching sessions, we were delighted to learn that the changes that Tarmac’s leaders had made since their workshop had empowered them to:
- Breakthrough the stigma of discussing mental health on-site
- Improve their own mental and physical wellbeing and that of their people
- Make better decisions more quickly, and communicate these far more effectively
- Implement Health & Safety measures more effectively, emphasising the responsibility of each individual on site to maintain standards
- Increase the productivity of their sites and exceed financial targets
- Reduce wastage of time and resources
- Reduce sickness absence due to stress
Both Managing Directors recognised the genuine contribution to these changes made to the performance of their businesses, improving financial returns and the safety of their people.
